The Intersection of Narrative and Game Design
Exploring how story and mechanics can work together to create unforgettable experiences — lessons from Juvenate.
When I joined the Juvenate project, I was handed a brief: make the world feel real. Not realistic — real. There's a difference, and it's everything in game design.
Story Isn't Just Cutscenes
The best narrative design is invisible. It lives in the environment, the UI, the sound design, the typography. When a player reads a shop sign and it feels like it belongs to that world, that's narrative design working.
Typography as World-Building
For Juvenate, I developed a custom calligraphic type system that evolved across different in-game regions. The north used angular, geometric letterforms. The coastal towns had flowing, organic scripts.
